In recent years, Bavaria has established itself as a leading location for the aerospace and new space industry and is playing a key role in Europe. With numerous companies, renowned research institutions, and a clear political strategy to support this future-oriented sector, the Free State is creating the optimal conditions for innovation and growth.

A Strong Industry with a Lot Behind It

The aerospace industry in Bavaria employs between 38,000 and 60,000 people, depending on which sub-sectors are included in the statistics. Around 550 companies are active in this sector, generating an annual revenue of approximately 12 billion euros. But the importance of the industry extends far beyond these impressive numbers: It is essential for technological development and international competitiveness in areas such as mobility, security, medicine, and agriculture.

Excellent Research Landscape as a Driver of Innovation

Bavaria is characterised by an exceptionally dense research landscape that significantly contributes to the aerospace sector’s innovative strength. Numerous renowned research institutions are active in this field, including:

  • German Aerospace Centre (DLR): One of the most important institutions for aerospace research in Germany.
  • Aerospace Flight Test Center: A key centre for testing new technologies.
  • ESA Business Incubation Centre (BIC): Supports start-ups focusing on space technologies.
  • Centre for Telematics: Advances innovative solutions in communication and satellite technology.
  • Fraunhofer Institutes, Max Planck Society, Munich Aerospace, and Bauhaus Luftfahrt: Conduct top-tier research in various aerospace fields.
  • Technical University of Munich (TUM), University of the Bundeswehr Munich, Munich University of Applied Sciences, Ingolstadt Technical University of Applied Sciences, University of Würzburg: Academic excellence and the education of highly qualified young professionals.

These institutions drive both fundamental and applied research and are essential to the continued development of the industry.

Political Support as a Decisive Factor

Another major reason for Bavaria’s success in aerospace is the targeted support from the Bavarian state government. Through the Hightech Agenda Bayern a total of 5.5 billion euros is being invested in cutting-edge research into key technologies, with 700 million euros allocated specifically to aerospace. This unprecedented commitment is reflected in projects such as:

  • Establishment of Europe’s largest aerospace campus: A state-of-the-art research centre is being developed at the Technical University of Munich with around 50 professorships and over 4,000 students. It aims to become Europe’s top location for aerospace science.
  • Aerospace cluster within bavAIRia e. V.: A platform connecting business, science, and politics to foster synergies and drive innovation.
  • Bavaria as a technology leader in satellite systems: The Free State is heavily investing in the development of satellite technologies and has become internationally recognised as a key player in this critical technology field.
  • The Moon Centre at the DLR site in Oberpfaffenhofen: A European counterpart to NASA’s Houston location is being developed here to drive the research and development of new technologies for lunar and Mars missions.

Ideal Testing Conditions through Specialised Airports

One of Bavaria’s special advantages is the number of airports available for test flights and the development of new aviation systems. Key locations include:

  • Hof Airport
  • Manching Airport
  • Augsburg Airport
  • Oberpfaffenhofen Airport

These sites offer ideal conditions for companies and research institutions to test new technologies – from unmanned aerial systems to innovative propulsion and navigation systems.

Boosting Innovation through Start-ups and Accelerator Programs

Alongside established companies and research institutions, start-ups also play a vital role in Bavaria’s aerospace sector. The state government and private investors provide targeted support for young companies with innovative ideas. The most important initiatives include

  • brigkAIR: A start-up incubator for three-dimensional flying, helping young companies develop new mobility concepts.
  • Starburst Accelerator: An internationally recognised program for promoting start-ups in the aerospace industry.
  • TUM Venture Lab Aerospace: An innovation centre by the Technical University of Munich (TUM) and UnternehmerTUM.

These programs not only offer valuable networks, mentoring, and market access but also easier access to the right investors, significantly increasing the chances of young companies establishing themselves in this highly innovative sector.

Shaping Tomorrow Today: Bavaria as a Future Hub for Aerospace

Bavaria is undoubtedly one of the most important locations for the aerospace industry in Europe. The combination of a strong corporate landscape, excellent research, targeted political support, and innovative start-ups makes the Free State a centre for technological progress and economic success. With ongoing developments in satellites, new aviation systems, and space exploration, Bavaria will continue to play a pioneering role in the global aerospace industry. The trajectory is clear: to infinity and beyond!
